Getting Started

One key to success in Placemaking is flexibility--you never know what solution you're going to end up with. Our process stays flexible from start to finish, enabling you to choose which combination of services fits your needs the best.

Some people approach us because they are passionate about creating better places in their community but find that they lack sufficient public awareness or institutional backing to move forward. PPS can help build momentum for your efforts and make the case for your ideas. We identify partners so that you can strengthen support for the project and forge new relationships that ensure success. We also deliver customized public presentations that clearly communicate the need for public places that bring people together. It's a powerful way to build awareness in your community and lay the foundation for lasting change.

Other clients ask us where they should concentrate their efforts, and we work with them to identify which sites have the most potential to become important public space destinations. We explore opportunities at the scale that makes sense for your needs: the region, the city, the neighborhood, or any combination thereof. Using the concept of the "Power of Ten," we set the goal of creating at least ten great destinations at each scale, with ten things to do at each place. The result is a plan for improvement that makes a wide variety of great public spaces accessible throughout your community.

You may already know exactly which places you want to focus on. With our unique on-site exercises, we'll help you determine how well these places are functioning and how they can be improved. These evaluations capture the best local knowledge and apply it directly to the task of making better places.
